Moose bulk up for the Blades

KANSAS CITY --  The Manitoba Moose have beefed up their roster in time for another clash with those pesky Kansas City Blades.

Moose head coach and general manager Randy Carlyle acquired forwards Doug Doull and Corey Spring yesterday, and the pair will be in the lineup for tonight's IHL game against the 9-11-3 Blades.

The 6-foot-2, 216-pound Doull was assigned to the Moose directly from the IHL Detroit Vipers, while the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Spring was assigned by the Tampa Bay Lightning, the NHL affiliate of the Vipers.

"Automatically, they made us bigger," Carlyle said. "With our (smaller) size down the middle, we'd like to make sure we reinforce with some size on the wings."

He described Doull, who had two assists and 69 penalty minutes in 17 games with Detroit, as a "tenacious" player, and said both will battle for their teammates.

In 20 games with the Vipers this season, Spring recorded five goals and four assists. A five-year pro in the IHL, AHL and NHL, he's played 16 games with Tampa.

Carlyle also sent forward Quinn Hancock back to Muskegon of the UHL. He had a goal and four assists in seven Moose games.

Manitoba winger Mike Prokopec stayed in Winnipeg, nursing a charley horse he suffered in last Friday's win against Detroit.

With the pair of new additions, the 15-10-4 Moose have 11 forwards and six defenceman on the roster.

Moose winger Jimmy Roy has a fractured bone in his nose after Blades forward Dody Wood smacked him in the face in Manitoba's 4-3 win over Kansas City last Sunday.

Manitoba centre Bill Bowler will be back in the lineup after serving a two-game suspension for his part in a Nov. 26 stick-swinging incident with Blades blueliner Grant Richison. "I'm not much for sitting out," said Bowler, who has 28 points. "I'm very eager to get back in."
