Springer's First NHL TV Interview

During the second period intermission of the Lightning-Canucks game on March 18, 1998, Bobby "The Chief" Taylor conducted an interview with Springer.

Bobby Taylor: It's kind of a been a long way for you to get from Adirondack this year up to Tampa and the national league, Corey. The first couple of times they called you, you were injured. Can you explain what happened, and how it went about?
Corey Spring: Um, yeah, I had a great start to the season down there, things were really positive. Um, I heard a few rumors that I might be coming up, and I pulled my groin, missed ten games, and during that time Phil called down to bring me up and I was obviously out, so it didn't work the first time. And I got playing again, played about twelve games, hurt my elbow, which was the second time they called, and I missed three games during that time, and I mean, I was just a little bit frustrated. You never really know if you're ever gonna get another call again. But I stuck with it, and got back healthy again and the third time they called I was healthy, so here I am.
Bobby Taylor: I know that during the summer you spend a lot of time working on your skating, and power skating drills and just keeping up your conditioning and that just for that one dream to get up here and play and play regularly.
Corey Spring: Yeah, I mean it's been a long road for me. I was a late bloomer and went the college route where I played four years for the University of Alaska-Fairbanks where I improved on my skating a lot and just in the summers a lot of hard work, power skating, strengthening my legs, and its given me a chance to improve and play in the National Hockey League.
Bobby Taylor: How did you chose the University of Alaska, or how did you end up there?
Corey Spring: Well, I wanted to go the college route because I wasn't a great player when I was at junior age, I thought I needed some time to develop in college hockey and ended up going to Fairbanks. They were the team that showed the most interest in me, and that's where I went. I knew I was going to get a lot of ice time, so that's what made my decision for me.
Bobby Taylor: Well, it's paid off in that first NHL goal against Boston. That's gotta bring a huge smile to your face. That's gonna be on a plaque, I betcha, on your wall.
Corey Spring: Yeah, definitely. Actually my father and I were talking about it. He's got his first NHL goal puck. He's gonna take it off the plaque that it's on and we're gonna put them both together. It was great scoring in Boston where my dad started his career. It was big thrill for me.
Bobby Taylor: Well, let's hope it the first of many, many to come, Corey. Thanks for being our guest.
Corey Spring: All right, thanks a lot.
